In awadh, the revolt was bravely led by Begum Hazrat Mahal. The mutiny of the sepoys of the seventh regular infantry regiment at Marion cantonment in Lucknow now in May 1857 marked the beginning of the uprising in awadh.
In no time and armed revolt turned into a general uprising of the people. The success of Nana Sahib troops at Kanpur and progress towards Lucknow filled the city with renewed hope.
