Cognitive dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling aroused by the simultaneous possession of two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values. The classic example of this is a smoker who knows smoking will shorten his life but still smokes.

Explanation of Idea: One's life partner has been cheating on them for months and they are madly in love with them and refuse to leave because they don't want their family to break apart as a result from divorce proceedings and so they stay with them even though they feel disgust toward them when they see their lover's car parked outside someone else's house late at night.
