"Extrinsic motivation" is a term used in psychology to explain the type of motivation that comes from outside an individual. It can be contrasted with intrinsic motivation, which comes from the enjoyment of an activity or the desire for self-growth and accomplishment.

We all want to be motivated in life, but extrinsic versus intrinsic motivations often have drastically different effects on our moods and overall happiness. This set-up is called “the overjustification effect”: when someone's behavior is augmented by external rewards, they are more likely to experience a diminishing sense of satisfaction with that activity.Letsdiskuss
