We all want to be motivated in life, but extrinsic versus intrinsic motivations often have drastically different effects on our moods and overall happiness. This set-up is called “the overjustification effect”: when someone's behavior is augmented by external rewards, they are more likely to experience a diminishing sense of satisfaction with that activity.
