The word "gossip" derives from the Old English word gōs, meaning "the act or practice of speaking about others in a malicious, idle, or casual way."
As for what gossiping entails today, it is defined as the act of passing on (often malicious) information about other people via conversation. The form this takes can be oral or written and is indirect communication. This is most often done by sharing rumors and personal opinions with one another to pass along a message which may not otherwise be truthful.
Gossiping can also be considered as a form of entertainment for some individuals where they are entertained by hearing the latest news and stories from their friends.
