The National Rural Health Mission is a program initiated by the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with the goal to increase equity in rural areas. In 2004, India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh issued a national health policy which highlighted disparities between health conditions of people living in rural and urban areas as well as accelerating poverty alleviation. To effectively address this disparity, the National Rural Health Mission was launched in 2005.
The goal of The National Rural Heath Mission is to provide all citizens with accessible, affordable quality health care services that are sustainable for long-term development and growth. As India moves from an agrarian to an industrial society the need for educated healthcare professionals will only grow.
