Queer theory is a field of critical theory. The theory emerged in the early 1990’s. Queer Theory is related to Queer Studies. These studies are mainly LGBT studies, that are issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity. The informal use of the term began in 1980’s by Gloria Anzaldua and other scholars. The key concept behind the theory is the idea of heteronormativity .Core theorists are Michael Foucault, Gayle Rubin, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, and Judith Butler.
