The main aim of MTRC (Mobile Train Radio Communication) is to provide direct and reliable voice communication between loco pilot, station master and controller. It also aims at facilitating modern train control systems and better communication in the operations of trains.

In simple terms, MTRC enables railroad staff to communicate with one another quickly and thus allows train operations to be better managed.

MTRC Fundamentals:

  • MTRC stands for: Mobile Train Radio Communication.

  • Main use: Railroad communications

  • Principal objective: To give railroad operating staff direct voice communication

  • Communication: Station Master, Loco Pilot and Controller

  • Further purpose: For modern railroad control systems

What is the main goal of MTRC?

The main objective of the MTRC is to provide a direct line of communication between the people who operate and control trains.

This enables the loco pilot, station master and controller to communicate with each other during train operations. Fast communication is important in railroad operations as it enables different teams to coordinate train movements and respond to operational situations.

MTRC is also designed for use with modern train control systems, and therefore is an important part of railroad communication and signaling modernization.

The importance of MTRC

The working of railroads depends on the co-operation of many people. Train crew, station staff and control center need to pass information to coordinate train movements.

This is supported by MTRC through a dedicated communication system for railroad operations.

Why do we need MTRC?

  • Enables railroad staff to communicate directly

  • Links the loco pilot, station master and controller

  • Allows for better coordination during train operations

  • Can be used with current train control systems.

  • Modernization of railroad communication infrastructure

How does MTRC assist Indian Railroads?

Indian Railroads has implemented MTRC systems based on technologies like GSM-R and TETRA. The system has been provided over 3,460 route kilometers, the Ministry of Railroads said in 2021. Additional LTE-based MTRC work covering 34,304 route kilometers has also been approved.

Not just for ordinary mobile communication is the purpose. MTRC is specially designed for railroad operation and train control with reliable communication between operational personnel.

So in plain language, what is MTRC trying to do?

MTRC is designed for direct voice communication between loco pilot, station master, controller and to support modern train control systems.

This enables direct communication between key railroad personnel and helps to ensure the seamless co-ordination of train operations.

Final thought.

The easiest way to remember what MTRC is trying to do is to think of it as a dedicated communication system for the railroad.

It is mainly intended to provide a direct voice communication link between the loco pilot, station master and controller, but also supports modern train control systems.
