Today, March 23rd, is a very emotional and important day for every Indian. We call this day Shahid Diwas, which in English means "Martyrs' Day." While there are a few days in the year when we remember our brave soldiers, this particular date is very special because it is the day when our great freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru were hanged by the British government in 131.
The significance of Shahid Diwas today is not just about remembering the past, but it is about the "Josh" and the spirit of young India. Even after so many years, when a young boy or girl hears the name of Bhagat Singh, their blood starts pumping with patriotism. These three young men were very brave. They did not fear death. At a very young age, when most people think about their careers or marriage, they were thinking about how to make India free from British rule.
In 1931, they were hanged in the Lahore Jail. It is said that they went to the gallows with a smile on their faces and were singing patriotic songs. This sacrifice changed the whole freedom movement in India. It showed the British that Indians are not afraid to give their lives for their motherland. Today, we observe this day to say "Thank You" to them. Without their sacrifice, we might not be living in a free country today.
For the young generation of 2026, Shahid Diwas is a reminder that freedom is not free. Today, we see many people busy on their mobile phones and social media, but on March 23, everyone stops for a moment to pay respect. Schools and colleges hold special programs, and people light candles to remember the "Trio" of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev. Even the Government of India and various leaders visit memorials to offer flowers.
Another big significance of this day is the message of "Inquilab Zindabad." This slogan was made famous by Bhagat Singh. It means "Long Live the Revolution." Today, it doesn't mean we have to fight with guns. For a common Indian today, it means fighting against corruption, fighting for cleanliness, and working hard to make India a "Viksit Bharat" or a developed nation.
We also remember that Bhagat Singh was a very intelligent person who loved reading books. He wanted an India where everyone is equal and there is no poverty. So, celebrating Shahid Diwas today means we should try to follow his ideas of equality and bravery in our daily lives.
In short, Shahid Diwas is a day of pride and some sadness too. It tells us that our history is full of heroes who didn't want fame or money, they only wanted a free sky for us. We should never forget their names. Whenever you see the Tricolor flying high today, remember those three young faces who gave up their "today" for our "tomorrow." Jai Hind!
