Today, March 23, is Shaheed Diwas (Martyrs' Day) in India. It's the day we honour the martyrdom of three legendary freedom fighters—Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar—who were hanged by the British in Lahore Central Jail exactly on this date in 1931.
These young revolutionaries (all in their early 20s) gave their lives for India's independence. They had carried out daring acts like the Central Assembly bombing and avenging Lala Lajpat Rai's death, always shouting "Inquilab Zindabad!" Their fearless spirit and sacrifice shook the British empire and ignited the freedom movement across the country.
On this day, schools, government offices, and people across India (especially in Punjab and Delhi) hold tributes, prayer meetings, and moments of silence. It's not just about remembering the past—it's a reminder of the courage, patriotism, and sacrifice that built our nation. Their message of justice and equality still feels relevant even today.
Jai Hind!
