There is a social stigma that society has to get over which prevents people from asking for help. On the face of it, there doesn't seem to be much justification for this stigma. In general, people should try and help each other when needed, right? Unfortunately, society places a lot of importance on privacy, and privacy concerns may very well be the main reason why this social stigma exists.
In theory, the benefits of opening up to a friend or loved one who might offer assistance in a time if need could outweigh any privacy concerns that an individual would have. Unfortunately, many people are too hesitant or afraid of being judged because they might be able to reach out to someone in their life who needs support in some way.
