Theorigin of this day was from the labour union movement in the United States in the 19th century. In 1889, theinternational socialist congress took a resolution that the workers should not be forced to work more than 8 hours
a day. After that 1st may is celebrated as the labours' day.
In 1890, may 1 was first celebrated as May Day. In India, this is a national holiday. Some places do celebratethis day. In 1923, the first labours' day was celebrated in Chennai. But there is some variation. Like in the US andCanada, they celebrate the first Monday of September as the labours' day.
The date and time may vary. But the observation is constant throughout the world. On this day people celebratethe day by conducting a protest march for the rights of the workers. This day is the day of the workers.
