The Republic of South Africa is located on the continent of Africa, in the southern hemisphere. It is bordered by Namibia to the northwest, Botswana to the northeast, Zimbabwe and Mozambique to the east, and Swaziland and Lesotho to the south.

It covers an area of 1 609 200 km2 (617 234 sq mi) with a coastline length of 3 288 km (2 179 miles). The country shares borders with nine other countries: Namibia on its northwest border; Botswana on its northeast border; Zimbabwe at its southeast border; Mozambique at its east border; Swaziland at north eastern side near Mozambique and Lesotho at south eastern side near Zimbabwe.
