In the female body, the kidneys are located in the back part of the abdomen, on both sides of the spine. They sit just below the rib cage and above the waist.
Most of each kidney lies behind the stomach and intestines, which is why kidney pain is usually felt in the lower back or side, not in the front.
Women and men have the same kidney position—the location does not change because of gender.
