Film making has emerged in an art form which is being embraced by youngsters today, quite a lot. Unlike old times, when writing and painting were regarded as the highest of all art forms, film making and direction are the need of hour today. More and younger writers are emerging these days, not only in mainstream Bollywood but also in television, web series, and other entertainment platforms.

To encourage the art of film making, more and more institutes and colleges are being opened in India and they are creating exceptional film makers. Here are the best three.

1. Film and Television Institute of India, Pune

If you have ever wondered on the directional skills of Subhash Ghai, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, or Raj Kumar Hirani, then here’s the answer to all your questions. All these directors have studied film making in FTII. Started in 1960, it is now an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.

The institute offers the course of three year postgraduate diploma in direction, and you are eligible for admission if you are a graduate in any discipline from a reputed university. It offers 12 seats every year, the admission to which is based on an entrance exam.

2. Satyajit Ray Films and Television Institute, Kolkata

The name says it all, doesn’t it? Named after the iconic writer and film maker Satyajit ray, SRFTI is a member of CILECT, international Association of Film and Television Schools.

The course this institute offers is a three year postgraduate program in cinema, which is a full time course. The eligibility criteria and the number of seats are same as FTII, and the admission requires you to pass an entrance exam, a 4 day orientation course, and a final interview.

3. Whistling Woods International, Mumbai

It was established in 2006, and one of the major reasons of it being one of the most imminent film making institutes is its location, which places it in the heart of Entertainment city of India. The chairperson of this institute is none other than, Subhash Ghai.

The courses offered here are full time, and span over two years. WWI offers specialization in Acting, Cinematography, Direction, Editing, Business of Film & Television, Sound Recording, Design and Music Production, Animation and Screenwriting.

The faculty and advisory board of the institute includes many iconic names associated with film industry like Shyam Benegal, Naseeruddin Shah, Hema Malini, Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar, A.R. Rahman, Dilip Kumar, Javed Akhtar, Mahesh Bhatt, Om Puri, Ramesh Sippy, Shabana Azmi, Ashutosh Gowariker, Nagesh Kukunoor, Satish Kaushik.
