When it comes to choosing a career, the narrative has changed today.

Sure, Indian parents, in particular, continue to push their kids to opt for streams that they think is right and would give them (the parents) a social status among their friends… "my daughter is a doctor" "my son is an engineer".

(It’s very evident in the fact that even with massive un-success and irrelevancy rate, engineering and MBA remains as go-to options!)

But here's the biggest punch line:

We're living in the greatest era EVER were pursuing your passion is the easiest and more rewarding. And this is just as true for girls as for the boys.

So, if you're a girl in India, the best career you can choose for yourself is simply follow your dreams and work on what you're passionate about.

I get it! "Follow your passion" is extremely clichéd. But that doesn’t change the fact that it's also unbelievably fitting and right.

Yes, we still have a long way to go when it comes to societal liberalization. Not every profession is welcoming to women. Unequal pay between genders remains a challenge.

But things are changing. It's changing very fast. The Internet has decentralized society, bringing each of us an infinite amount of power.

As a girl in India, just like boys, you can virtually be anyone you wish. So, no matter how unachievable your "passion" looks at the moment, if you’re ready to chip in the necessary hard work, you can make it happen.

Want to be a commercial pilot? Want to join IAF? Want to start a business? Want to be a driver? Want to travel?

It all possible for girls in India now.

So, there are two things that pop when you, as a girl, is deciding the right career path for yourself:

• Today, it’s no different for girls than boys. Internet, at large, has given us equality in opportunity irrespective of genders.

• Don’t follow the crowd. Follow your passion. What is that one thing that you want to do for the rest of your life? Find that out and do it.

Now, of course, let's address the elephant in the room…

Even the most ambitious women in India have to give up months and years of her career during pregnancy and following the birth of the child. Patriarchal it may be, women are still primarily tasked to take care of their babies. In the process, losing time and track off their career path is rather imminent.

This is unavoidable… at least up to a period.

So, this is definitely something that must go as one of the factors when deciding your career path.

For instance, if you’re going to be a travel blogger, how are you going to manage the family? Will your husband be fine with your decision to not have kids? Will he be supportive?

OR, if you decide to join Indian army, how that decision will affect your own personal life with family?

So, while choosing a career itself requires lots of thinking and planning, girls in India (and everywhere for that matter) have to consider a factor or two more in the decision-making.

In the end, a lot also depends on the kind of person you marry. If he is supportive of your goals and ambitions, you two can very well work things out together. After all, stay-at-home dad is fast becoming acceptable in ultra-urban India.

Besides, there's also this thing: no matter how much you love what you do, burn out is a real deal. So, on the back of proper planning, taking a break for a few years to raise a family has its own pros and privilege.

To sum up, in simple words, to answer your question, for a girl in India, the best career option is just as same as for a boy: do what you love. Identify your passion and make it your life's purpose.
