On 27 December 2020, the ICC announced its one-off "Awards of the Decade," covering the period January 2011 to October 2020. Virat Kohli won Men's Cricketer of the Decade while Ellyse Perry was named Women's Cricketer of the Decade.
Kohli swept two men's categories:
ICC Male Cricketer of the Decade — officially called the Sir Garfield Sobers Award. This recognized the cricketer with the most runs across all international cricket during the decade — 20,396 runs, more than anyone else.
ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Decade — Kohli also took this award.
Why Kohli Won
He was part of the 2011 World Cup-winning squad and the 2013 Champions Trophy win, and led India to a first-ever Test series win in Australia in 2018.
In the award period, he scored the most international hundreds (66 of his 70), the most fifties (94), the most runs (20,396), and had the highest average (56.97) among players with 70+ innings.
In ODIs specifically, he was the fastest player ever to reach 10,000 runs.
What He Didn't Win
Worth noting because it shows the panel wasn't just rubber-stamping Kohli across the board: Steve Smith won the Test Cricketer of the Decade, for 7,040 runs in 69 Tests at an average of 65.79 with 26 centuries — denying Kohli a clean sweep of the format-specific awards.
