Light was never invented. Nobody built it in a workshop or patented it. It's a natural phenomenon that existed for roughly 13.8 billion years before humans showed up to argue about what it is. So the real question worth answering is: who figured out what light actually is, and who learned to control it?
That's two separate stories, and mixing them up is where most confusion about this topic starts.
Understanding what light is
Ancient Greeks had theories, most of them wrong. Some thought vision worked because the eye sent out rays that touched objects. It took centuries to flip that around and realize light travels from a source into the eye, not the other way.
Real progress started in the 1600s and 1700s:
Isaac Newton argued light was made of particles. He split white light through a prism and showed it contained a spectrum of colors, which was genuinely useful even though his particle theory was incomplete.
Christiaan Huygens argued light behaved like a wave. He built a mathematical model for how waves spread out and reflect.
These two camps fought for over a century because both had evidence supporting them, and neither side could explain everything.
James Clerk Maxwell settled a huge piece of it in the 1860s. He showed that light is an electromagnetic wave, a self-propagating ripple of electric and magnetic fields. His equations predicted the speed of light before anyone measured it that precisely, which is one of the cleaner wins in the history of physics.
Then Einstein complicated things again in 1905. He showed light also behaves like discrete packets of energy, what we now call photons, to explain the photoelectric effect. That work won him the Nobel Prize, not relativity, for what it's worth.
So light turned out to be both a wave and a particle depending on how you measure it. Physicists call this wave-particle duality, and it still trips people up because it doesn't map onto anything in everyday experience.
Controlling and producing light artificially
This is a different question: who figured out how to make light on demand.
Fire is the oldest answer, going back roughly a million years to early hominids.
Oil lamps and candles came much later and just refined combustion.
Gas lighting spread through cities in the early 1800s.
Electric light is where names get thrown around loosely. Humphry Davy demonstrated an electric arc lamp in 1802. Joseph Swan and Thomas Edison both developed practical incandescent bulbs independently in the late 1870s, and Edison gets disproportionate credit mostly because he also built the infrastructure to distribute electricity and commercialize the bulb at scale. Credit for invention and credit for market execution got flattened into one name in popular memory, which is inaccurate.
LEDs came from work by Nick Holonyak in 1962, building on earlier semiconductor research by multiple scientists across different countries.
None of this is a single clean lineage. It's overlapping contributions, competing claims, and commercial framing doing a lot of work to simplify history into a story with one hero.
