In India, one man or woman is chosen as Speaker of Rajya Sabha to hold office during its sessions until another person has been elected to replace them. There are currently 12 members in the Rajya Sabha including the speaker and he or she has a term of three years when they take up this role.
The first person to hold this position was G.V Mavlankar, who was the Minister of Food and Agriculture in the Bombay unit. The current Speaker of the Rajya Sabha is Mr. Hamid Ansari who started his term after he won an election for the post in which no other members stood against him.
The Speaker of Rajya Sabha is given a lot of power when they assume office as as they can ensure that all members follow the rules and regulations during debates in parliament, as well as control any arguments or disagreements among them.
