"The Father of Management" is a phrase that was coined by Chester Barnard, an American sociologist and an executive in the United States during the early 20th century. The phrase is used to describe Barnard's accomplishments in advancing management as a discipline and his contributions to modern business.
Chester Barnard was born on July 26, 1887. He attended Brown University where he studied philosophy and sociology then continued at Harvard University where he earned a PhD from the Department of Economics. His work was influenced by John Dewey, William James, George Herbert Mead, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., Horace Kallen, Walter Dill Scott and Thorstein Veblen among others.
