Many people in India are asking who is not eligible for the LPG gas subsidy because the government rules have changed recently. Earlier, almost everyone was getting some money back in their bank account, but now it is only for specific groups.

The most important rule is the income limit. If you or your spouse has a taxable income of more than ₹10 lakh in a single financial year, then you are not eligible for the LPG subsidy. Even if only one person in the house earns this much, the whole family loses the benefit. This is because the government wants to give help only to poor people.

Secondly, if you have not linked your Aadhaar card with your gas connection and your bank account, your subsidy will stop. This process is called KYC. Without doing this, the computer system will not send money to your account.

Also, those who have "opted out" or voluntarily given up their subsidy under the 'Give It Up' campaign cannot get it back easily. Currently, the main focus of the subsidy is for people under the PM Ujjwala Yojana scheme. If you are a general category customer with high income, you have to pay the full market price for the cylinder. Always check your status on the MyLPG website to be sure.

In India, the LPG subsidy (through the PAHAL/DBTL scheme and linked to regular domestic connections) is no longer universal like it used to be. Since around 2020, the general public mostly pays full market price for cylinders, with targeted help mainly going to PM Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries (poor households, especially rural women who got free or supported connections).

For regular (non-PMUY) domestic LPG users, very few get the subsidy nowadays, and certain categories are clearly not eligible or get excluded. Here's who typically doesn't qualify:

  • People (or their spouse) with taxable income above ₹10 lakh in the previous financial year — this has been the main exclusion rule since 2016. If you or your spouse filed income tax returns showing income > ₹10 lakh, subsidy is denied.
  • Income tax payers in general (especially higher-income ones) — the system often flags regular taxpayers and blocks subsidy.
  • Commercial LPG users — hotels, restaurants, shops, or any business using gas don't get domestic subsidy.
  • Households with multiple LPG connections at the same address — only one domestic connection per household is allowed for subsidy eligibility; extra ones are illegal/blocked.
  • Those who haven't completed KYC or Aadhaar linking properly — subsidy gets paused or denied if verification is incomplete.
  • Non-domestic users — anyone using it for industrial/commercial purposes obviously doesn't qualify.

For PMUY beneficiaries (the main group still getting some support like ₹300 per cylinder in some cases, extended in recent years), the subsidy is targeted at poor/rural households, so higher-income folks, general category without BPL/SECC criteria, or those who already have a regular connection usually don't qualify for new PMUY benefits.

Bottom line: If you're middle-class or above, file income tax, have a good income, or run a business from home using gas, you're most likely paying full price for cylinders with no subsidy. The government shifted focus to really needy families long back.

You can check your exact status on mylpg.in (for Indane/Bharat/HP) by entering your consumer number — it shows if subsidy is active or not. Hope that clears it up!
