In April 1930, C. Rajagopalachari organised a protest on the Tanjore coast to protest the Salt Law. The march was led by Rajagopalachari, a close ally of Gandhi, and included close to 150 volunteers, the most of whom were members of the Indian National Congress. It began on April 13, 1930, in Trichinopoly (now Tiruchirappalli) and ran for about 150 miles (240 kilometres) east to Vedaranyam, a small town in the Tanjore District. The marchers breached the salt prohibition by gathering salt straight from the sea.
