He was3 also known as Mahakavi Kalidas because of his contribution to Sanskrit literature.He was a Classical Sanskrit writer who is often considered ancient India's greatest playwright .His play Abhijñānaśākuntalam ("Of the recognition of Śakuntalā") a masterpiece was among the first Sanskrit works to be translated into English, and has since been translated into many languages.His works consist of three plays, two epic poems and two shorter poems.Kalidasa was considered to have been one of the “nine gems” of King Vikramaditya’s court .
