Kalidasa the Sanskrit writer who wrote epic, plays, poems, etc. came to be known as Indian Shakespeare. He was regarded as the greatest dramatist of the Sanskrit language. The period of the dramatist is linked with the reign of Vikramaditya. The works of the great Sanskrit writer were primarily based on the Vedas, the Mahabharata, and the Ramayana. The surviving works of the writer includes 2 short poems, 2 epics, and 3 plays.

Kalidasa was known as the Shakespeare of India’ and he wrote his plays, poems, epics, etc in Sanskrit. He was3 also known as Mahakavi Kalidas because of his contribution to Sanskrit literature.He was a Classical Sanskrit writer who is often considered ancient India's greatest playwright .His play Abhijñānaśākuntalam ("Of the recognition of Śakuntalā") a masterpiece was among the first Sanskrit works to be translated into English, and has since been translated into many languages.His works consist of three plays, two epic poems and two shorter poems.Kalidasa was considered to have been one of the “nine gems” of King Vikramaditya’s court .
