Dr. BR Ambedkar was a key figure in the development of the Indian Constitution. He was an economist, a political leader and one of the most outstanding ideologues of India's struggle for freedom from British rule.
Born on April 14th 1891 in Mhow, near Indore in Central India, Ambedkar grew up at a time when there were few opportunities for people from lower castes. His father and grandfather had worked with the British Army as cooks - his mother cared for him and his five siblings. While still at school he started to question why untouchables were not allowed entry into Hindu temples or to drink water from public wells.
