Hitler was born on April 20, 1889 in the small Austrian town of Braunau Am Inn in a modest house on Humboldt Street. His father, Alois Hitler, had been born out of wedlock to Maria Anna Schickelgruber and her unknown or low-status lover. (Some historians have speculated that the father may have been Jewish.) After his mother's death when he was only six years old and his brother was four years old, Alois Hitler took the boys to live with their unmarried paternal grandfather.
