The first person to take the first step on the Moon was Neil Armstrong. He was an American astronaut who was part of NASA's Apollo 11 mission to the Moon in 1969. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module (LM) named "Eagle" on the surface of the Moon. Armstrong then famously stepped out of the LM and declared, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," as he became the first human being to set foot on the Moon.
