Agriculture is the main occupation in India. Most of the population of India is involved in agriculture. Approx ⅔ of the Indian population has engaged in agriculture. Agriculture is called the backbone of Indian Economy. Agriculture and dairy/poultry/fishing are the main source of livelihood for more than 80% population of Rural area in India. It provides employment. Agriculture is the main source of income for people in rural area.


Letsdiskuss Agriculture is a primary activity, which produces raw materials for industries. India is a large producer of pulses, rice, wheat, spices. India is also the second largest producer of fruit in the world. Lot of spices, cotton, fruits are exported from India to other countries which are also the source of income for India. Agriculture exports constitute a fifth of the total export of the country.
One more reason that India is an agrarian country is “Population Density”. Population density also influences agricultural intensification and productivity. Because of the high population density unemployment problem increasing day by day. So this is also a big reason that most of the population of India is engaged in agriculture.

We can say that most of the people of India are directly or indirectly depends upon agriculture. Some are already in farming and some are doing business with these goods and raw materials. India is the largest producer of grains in the world. The government of India is also supporting farmers by giving loans in very low-interest rates and other machinery to the small farmers and also big farmers for the improvement in Indian Economy.
