There isn't a guaranteed formula for getting featured in Google AI Overviews, but Google's published guidance and real-world observations suggest that certain content characteristics consistently improve your chances.

Start by focusing on user intent rather than individual keywords. Instead of creating multiple articles targeting similar keyword variations, build one comprehensive resource that answers the complete user journey. This helps AI-powered search systems retrieve relevant information for different parts of a query.

Next, organize your content so it's easy to scan and understand. Use descriptive headings, comparison tables, bullet points, FAQs, and clear sections. Structured content makes important information easier for both readers and AI systems to identify and reference.

Originality also plays a major role. Add first-hand experience, unique insights, expert opinions, or original research whenever possible. AI search systems are more likely to reference content that provides value beyond what's already available on dozens of other websites.

Don't overlook the technical side of SEO. Ensure your pages are crawlable, mobile-friendly, fast-loading, and internally connected to related content. Strong technical SEO helps search engines access and understand your pages more efficiently.

Finally, avoid relying on unverified AI SEO hacks. Google has repeatedly emphasized that creating people-first, helpful content remains the foundation of visibility in both traditional Search and AI-powered experiences.

If you're looking for a practical example, read my Google AI Overview Case Study: Why One Article Was Cited While Others Weren't. In that article, I compare a page that appeared in AI Overviews with several that didn't, explain the patterns I observed, introduce the SOURCE Framework for AI-ready content, and share the lessons I learned after analyzing Google's official recommendations. It provides a real-world perspective on what may contribute to AI Overview visibility beyond the commonly discussed AI SEO tactics.
