A total of 10 teams played in the IPL 2026 season. The Indian Premier League continued with the same 10-franchise structure that has been in place since Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants joined the competition in 2022. The official IPL website lists all 10 participating franchises for the 2026 season.

IPL 2026 was the 19th edition of the tournament. It began on March 28, 2026, with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Personally, I think 10 teams work quite well for the IPL right now. There are enough franchises to represent different cities and create variety, but not so many that the tournament becomes impossible to follow. And with 70 league matches, every team's consistency gets properly tested.

10-Team List

The 10 teams in IPL 2026 were:

  1. Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

  2. Delhi Capitals (DC)

  3. Gujarat Titans (GT)

  4. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

  5. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)

  6. Mumbai Indians (MI)

  7. Punjab Kings (PBKS)

  8. Rajasthan Royals (RR)

  9. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)

  10. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

One thing I find interesting about this lineup is the mix of old and relatively new franchises. Teams like CSK, MI and KKR have been major IPL names for years, while GT and LSG only entered in 2022.

New Team Status

No new franchise was added for IPL 2026.

The most recent expansion happened in 2022 when Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants joined, increasing the league from eight to 10 teams.

So, if you've seen speculation about IPL expanding further, don't confuse possible future expansion with the confirmed 2026 competition. For current sports information, I always prefer checking the official IPL team list because franchise and tournament structures can change over time.

Tournament Format

The 10 teams competed through a 70-match league stage, followed by four playoff matches.

That means IPL 2026 had:

Stage

Matches

League stage

70

Playoffs

4

Total

74

The top four teams on the league table qualified for the playoffs.

The playoff structure consisted of Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2 and the Final.

Personally, I like this system because finishing in the top two genuinely matters. Those teams get an additional route to the final instead of the tournament immediately becoming a simple knockout after the league stage.

Squad Structure

While only 11 players form the starting side in a match, an IPL franchise has a much larger registered squad.

For the 2026 auction cycle, each team was permitted a maximum squad size of 25 players. The official retention announcement showed that the 10 franchises collectively retained 173 players before the auction, with 77 available squad slots remaining.

IPL playing conditions also state that a team cannot have more than four overseas players in its starting XI.

This is where team building gets interesting to me. Having superstar players isn't enough—you need Indian depth, overseas options, backups and players covering different roles across a long season.

The India Premier League 2026 will feature 10 teams competing in the tournament. These teams will play 74 league matches across different venues before the playoffs begin. Each team faces several opponents during the league stage to earn points and secure a place in the top four.
