An estimated 2.1 trillion gallons of water are wasted annually around the world, or about 30% of the global water supply. This is enough water to meet the basic needs of 3.5 billion people.
Causes of water waste:
- Leaks:Leaks in pipes and plumbing fixtures are a major source of water waste, accounting for about 25% of all wasted water.
- Inefficient water use:This includes things like leaving the faucet running while brushing your teeth or taking long showers.
- Agricultural overuse:Agriculture is the largest user of water, accounting for about 70% of all water withdrawals. However, much of this water is wasted due to evaporation, runoff, and inefficient irrigation practices.
- Industrial overuse:Industry is also a major user of water, accounting for about 20% of all water withdrawals. However, much of this water is also wasted due to inefficient practices.
