You have already seen that India has a vast mainland. Located the Lakshadweep Islands group lying close to the Matatiar coast of Kerala. This group of islands is composed of small coral salnds. Earlier they were known as Laccadive Mininy and Anumitive. In 1973, these were named as Lakshadweep. Island comes in different sizes some countries has small and some has large.

There are different types of Island -

  1. Tropical Island
  2. De - islanding
  3. Artificial Island.

Any piece of land that is surrounded by water on all sides is known as Island. Most of the islands are found in ocean & seas, a few are found in rivers, lakes & ponds.There are lot of small islands known as “Islets”.Some islands are fertile with lot of inhabitants while some are less fertile & uninhabited. Maldives is especially known & visited by number of tourists throughout the year just because of its beautiful islands. It is made up of more than 1200 small islands.
