The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. A huge portion of global oil and natural gas passes through this narrow waterway every day, which makes it strategically important for both the United States and Iran.

Whenever tensions rise between the US and Iran, the Strait of Hormuz becomes a major focus because any disruption there can affect global oil prices, shipping, and energy supplies worldwide. Iran has often warned about restricting traffic in the strait during conflicts, while the US and its allies try to keep the route open for international trade and security.

Because of this, even small military or political tensions in the region can quickly impact global markets and fuel prices

With tensions still continuing, many people are also wondering what could happen if the proposed 60-day ceasefire between the US and Iran fails.

According to me, the Strait of Hormuz is the biggest strategic pressure point in the entire US-Iran conflict because it controls one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. Nearly 20% of global seaborne oil trade passes through this narrow waterway between Iran and Oman, which makes it critical not just for the Middle East but for the entire global economy.

In my opinion, the Strait gives Iran enormous geopolitical leverage over the United States and its allies. Whenever tensions rise, Iran can threaten to block or disrupt the route using naval mines, drones, missile systems, or patrol boats. Even the fear of disruption immediately impacts global oil prices, shipping insurance costs, and fuel prices worldwide. Reports suggest that during the 2026 crisis, the Strait’s closure severely disrupted energy markets and increased fears of a global recession. 

For the United States, keeping the Strait open is a major military and economic priority. America wants uninterrupted oil flow to protect global trade stability and prevent energy prices from skyrocketing. That is why the US Navy increased its presence in the region and enforced maritime operations during the conflict. 

From Iran’s perspective, the Strait acts like a bargaining weapon. Iranian officials have openly described Hormuz as a capability powerful enough to affect the “entire global economy with a single decision.” By controlling or threatening the route, Iran gains leverage during negotiations over sanctions, nuclear restrictions, and military pressure.

I also think the Strait’s importance goes beyond oil. It represents regional influence and power. Whoever effectively controls Hormuz gains strategic dominance in the Gulf region. That is why reopening the Strait has become one of the central conditions in the ongoing US-Iran peace negotiations.
