This distinctive archipelago is a Union Territory of India and lies at a distance of around 1,200 kilometers from the Indian mainland. With a total of around 572 islands, it is surprising that hardly any of the islands are inhabited by human beings. The capital city, also known as Port Blair, is located on the island called South Andaman Island. Geographically, the islands are nearer to Southeast Asia than to the Indian mainland, and this gives them a strategic value. Further, the islands are renowned for their tropical climate, dense and luxuriant forests, clean and scenic beaches, and rich and varied marine biodiversity that draws scores of nature enthusiasts.
