In India, there are a few electric cars that will be your favorite depending on your needs (city driving, range, comfort, features) but India has a list of those that are likely to be the best EVs under a price of 20 lakh. The following are the best and the reasons.

Top EVs Under ₹20 Lakh (as of 2025)

Tata Nexon EV

An immensely popular EV compact SUV. Has a long-range option - with a stated driving range of up to approximately 489 km (long-range) - and is rather versatile as to urban and (infrequent) highway commuting.

Base variants cost in the range of ₹12.5 -13 lakh (ex-showroom)

A good combination of room, comfort, and EV-related attributes at a price that is not too high only enough to attract the family or a person who wants a slightly larger car.

Tata Punch EV

  • Smaller, compact-SUV / micro-SUV EV - fantastic to drive in the city, traffic, and narrow parking spots.
  • The cost of entry level is very low, which can be below 10 lakh ex-showroom and it is one of the cheapest EVs available in the market.
  • Due to its capacity and powerful battery, it is particularly ideal in day to day commuting in the city instead of a long highway journey.

MG ZS EV (less/low-price versions)

  • The EVs that are more SUV-like - somebody needs a larger cabin, SUV-like ride and feel. Others are below ₹ 20 lakh (this may differ depending on where one is).
  • Has a fairly large battery and a good range relative to other hatchback-based EVs - handy when you feel like being spacious and making longer trips.
  • It may make a nice compromise when you are found to need an EV that can be classified as premi-ish but not premium in terms of cost.

Best Which is Best, It Depends upon your Needs

  • In case you are more interested in range + versatility + use on the highway occasionally → Tata Nexon EV.
  • Looking to save money, park at any place, and drive an efficient EV around the city on a daily basis → Tata Punch EV.
  • In case you prefer SUV feel, comfort, and a slightly better premium impression (not too expensive) → MG ZS EV (lower variant).

Caution: Before You Make Your Decision

  • Under 20lakh is generally understood as ex-showroom price - real on-road cost may be more (registration, taxes, insurance, etc.).
  • Even the range claims are usually based on ideal driving/charging conditions; actual range can vary depending on traffic, driving habits, AC usage - this is of particular concern to city owners.
  • The availability of after-sales, charging infrastructure (home charging vs public chargers), and availability of maintenance in your city are important things - this can influence the real convenience and cost-benefit of owning an EV.
