Cai Lun
is credited with the invention of paper in 105 CE. He was a Chinese court official who was inspired by wasps and bees to create a new writing material from plant fibers. Cai Lun's paper was made from a mixture of rags, hemp, fishnets, and bark. It was much cheaper and easier to produce than other writing materials of the time, such as bamboo and silk.
Cai Lun's invention revolutionized communication and literacy in China. Paper quickly became the preferred writing material for both official and personal use. It also played a key role in the development of Chinese printing and bookmaking.
In the 8th century CE, papermaking spread to the Islamic world, and from there to Europe. By the 15th century, paper was being produced all over the world. Today, paper is one of the most important materials in human society. It is used for everything from writing and printing to packaging and hygiene products.
