Muslims just gave up the sacrifice of “goats” on Eid-Ul-Adhabut they surely lived up to the concept of sacrifice. This year, instead of slaughtering goats for sacrificial purposes, they made a financial sacrifice, both in the name of their religion and humanity. The news is indeed like some music to the years in the current scenario where religion and humanity seldom go hand in hand.

A progressive Muslim organization named “Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal”, asked their fellow-Muslims to donate the money they have kept for qurbani or the goat sacrifice to the Kerala flood relief funds. Many Muslims came forward for this humane cause and the Mandal was able to collect a sum of Rs. 5 Lakhs on the day of Eid-Ul-Azha. Indeed a rare example which puts the democratic ideal of “unity in diversity” at display!

Now this is the kind of sacrifice that god demands –giving up your comfort, your precious things to help those in real need. This seems to me a true interpretation of the legend of Ibrahim’s sacrifice of his son, Ismail, for his faith in Allah. This seems to me a true example where those in need can truly rest their faith in God.

May the sufferings of people in Kerala end soon!
