In Vedic astrology, planetary Dasha refers to a specific time period ruled by a planet, during which its influence becomes dominant in a person’s life,

1. Meaning of Planetary Dasha

  • Planetary Dasha is a time cycle that activates the results of a particular planet in the birth chart.

  • During this period, the planet influences major life events such as career, marriage, health, finances, and spiritual growth.

2. Total Duration of Dasha System

  • The most commonly used system is Vimshottari Dasha.

  • The complete Vimshottari Dasha cycle lasts 120 years.

  • Each planet rules for a fixed number of years within this cycle.

3. Duration of Each Planetary Dasha

According to Jyotish Acharya Rammehar Sharma, the length of each planetary Dasha is as follows:

  • Sun Dasha – 6 years

    • Represents authority, confidence, leadership, and fatherly influences.

  • Moon Dasha – 10 years

    • Affects emotions, mind, mother, and mental peace.

  • Mars Dasha – 7 years

    • Influences energy, courage, conflicts, and property matters.

  • Rahu Dasha – 18 years

    • Brings sudden changes, ambitions, foreign connections, and unconventional paths.

  • Jupiter Dasha – 16 years

    • Indicates wisdom, growth, education, children, and prosperity.

  • Saturn Dasha – 19 years

    • Tests patience, discipline, responsibility, and long-term stability.

  • Mercury Dasha – 17 years

    • Governs intellect, communication, business, and analytical abilities.

  • Ketu Dasha – 7 years

    • Focuses on spirituality, detachment, introspection, and karmic lessons.

  • Venus Dasha – 20 years

    • Brings love, luxury, marriage, comfort, and artistic success.

4. Role of Antardasha (Sub-Periods)

  • Each major Dasha is divided into Antardashas (sub-periods) of other planets.

  • Antardashas modify and refine the results of the main Dasha.

  • Even a favorable Dasha can give mixed results if the Antardasha planet is weak.

5. Why Dasha Results Differ for Every Person

As explained by Jyotish Acharya Rammehar Sharma:

  • The placement of the planet in the birth chart

  • Strength or weakness of the planet

  • Planetary aspects and conjunctions

  • Current transits (Gochar)

All these factors influence how a planetary Dasha actually performs.

6. Importance of Dasha Analysis

  • Dasha analysis helps in timing important life events.

  • It is crucial for making decisions related to career, marriage, business, and investments.

  • Remedies are most effective when applied during challenging Dashas.

7. Can Remedies Reduce Negative Effects?

  • Yes, astrological remedies such as mantras, charity, gemstones, and spiritual practices can indeed be beneficial.

  • According to Jyotish Acharya Rammehar Sharma, remedies work best when tailored to the individual horoscope rather than applied generally.

Planetary Dasha durations are fixed, but their results vary from person to person.
