The first time I tried downloading songs from Spotify to my laptop I thought there would be a simple Download button for every song. After spending a few minutes exploring the app I realized Spotify works a little differently. You can download music for offline listening but only if you have a Spotify Premium subscription. Also the downloaded songs stay inside Spotify and don't become regular MP3 files on your computer.
How to Download Spotify Music
If you're a Spotify Premium user, the process is quite simple.
Open the Spotify desktop app on your PC and sign in to your account. Next open the playlist album or podcast you want to save. You'll see a Download toggle near the top. Turn it on and Spotify will automatically start downloading the content.
Once the download finishes, you can listen to your music even when your PC isn't connected to the internet.
Can You Download Individual Songs?
This is something that confused me in the beginning.
On the desktop app Spotify doesn't let you directly download a single song. If there's only one song you want, simply add it to a playlist first and then download that playlist.
Things You Should Know
Many people think downloaded Spotify songs can be copied to a USB drive or played in VLC or Windows Media Player.
That's actually not possible.
Spotify stores downloaded music in an encrypted format, which means it only works inside the Spotify app. If your Premium subscription ends, you also lose offline access to those downloads.
Is Spotify Premium Worth It?
If you travel frequently, study in places with poor internet, or simply don't want to use mobile data all the time, then Spotify Premium's offline feature can be very useful.
For casual listeners the free version still offers access to millions of songs, but you'll need an internet connection to keep streaming.
Downloading Spotify music to a PC is straightforward as long as you understand one thing: Spotify is designed for offline listening rather than permanent downloads. If you have Premium, you can save playlists, albums, and podcasts in just a few clicks and enjoy them anywhere without an internet connection.
