TATA AIG MediPrime is a medical indemnity insurance plan that pays for a variety of medical fees incurred by the policyholder. Tata AIG Mediprim Policy provides cover for renal dialysis services up to Rs 1,000 per day. You will need to pay some money out of pocket for treatment. The policy covers hospitalization and outpatient care which includes all medicines and tests required. However they do not cover the actual process of dialysis which is very expensive at around Rs 10,000 per session in India.

What people/forums say

  • On LetsDiscuss, someone asked “Is cost of dialysis covered under Tata AIG mediprime policy?” The answer (by a forum user) was: Yes, Tata AIG Mediprim provides cover for renal dialysis services up to ₹1,000 per day. Some users say that dialysis is included under day-care procedures in Tata AIG MediCare Premier and similar plans. Under “day care” category, procedures that take less than 24 hours (including dialysis) may be covered.

What you need to check / what limits might apply

Even though forums say “yes,” there are often conditions or limits. Here are things to watch out for:

  1. Policy variant: “Mediprime / MediPrime / MediCare Premier / etc.” are different variants. Some may include dialysis as day-care, some may not. The exact plan (how much premium, sum insured, hospital network) matters.

  2. Waiting period: If you had kidney disease (or some related condition) before buying policy, there may be waiting periods or exclusions for pre-existing conditions. Forums mention that for pre-existing diseases, coverage may start after 2 years.

  3. Sub-limits: Even if dialysis is covered, there might be a limit on how much will be paid (per session or per day) or a cap on total amount. The “₹1,000 per day” figure from forum above is an example of a sub-limit.

  4. Day care vs hospitalisation: Dialysis may be categorized as “day care procedure” if it does not require overnight hospital stay. Many plans cover “day care procedures” for minor treatments that don’t require 24-hour admission.

  5. Sum insured / deductibles / co-payments: Even when covered, you may need to pay some out of pocket (co-payment) or abide by limits. Also, the cost may be subject to the sum insured of the policy.
