Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex hormonal condition affecting individuals with ovaries. It manifests with a range of symptoms, which can differ in severity among those affected. Common signs of PCOS include irregular menstrual cycles, marked by infrequent or absent periods, and an imbalance in androgen (male hormone) levels, leading to issues like acne, excessive body and facial hair, and male-pattern baldness.
Women with PCOS often encounter ovulatory difficulties, making it challenging to conceive, which can be a source of concern for those wishing to start a family. On ultrasound, their ovaries may appear enlarged with multiple small follicles, hence the term "polycystic."
Weight gain and obesity are common in PCOS, and it's frequently associated with insulin resistance, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Other possible symptoms encompass skin issues like acne and mood changes like depression and anxiety. Pelvic pain or discomfort may also occur due to enlarged ovaries or cysts.
