There is just one word to this answer –EVERYTHING.

Right from Zoya Akhtar’s direction to the raps that are representing the expressions of young street boys, everything about this movie is worth your time and money.

To start with the direction, the movie was in safe and trusted hands of the maker of Dil Chahta Hai and Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara. To say that Zoya Akhtar knows all the intricacies of the heart, soul, and mind of Indian youth along with their problems and challenges, won’t be an exaggeration.

We have seen multiple times the detailing that Akhtar gives to her characters whenever she is working on a project, and so will we do in Gully Boy.

Murad, played by Ranveer Singh represents two-real life street rappers, undoubtedly has brought all the true colors of a rapper, be it posture, poise, expressions, tone, and every other element that you can think about.

He is a shy and submissive son, an ambitious young man, and a loving boyfriend to much-empowered Sakheena, played by Alia Bhatt. We can safely say that Alia Bhatt has outdone her own Highway performance. The dialogues delivered by her in the movie are on everyone’s lips right now, and the same is true with all other dialogues and even lyrics.

The dialogues of the movie have us regain our faith in the art of dialogue-writing in Bollywood. And the same can be said with the lyrics of each and every song.

I was much impressed by the “Azaadi” track which refers to one of the most popular young faces of India, Kanhaiya Kumar. It truly expresses what many of us fail to say to the society, to our parents, and to the social set up which according to us is nowhere near our satisfaction (and this feeling is precisely portrayed not just by the lyrics but by the story of the movie).

Other interesting and notable characters in the movie are the foreign-returned musician played by Kalki Koechlin (there are no disappointments with her performance, whatsoever) and the abusive father of Murad who represents both, the helplessness and monstrosity of an Indian middle-class parent.

One character who stands out among all is that of Murad’s best friend, played by Siddhant Chaturvedi. He undeniably matched Ranveer’s skills and energy on screen.

All in all, the movie is a treat that a true Bollywood fan might have been waiting for since the start of the year.
