If you are wondering why there is no big celebration for the start of IPL 2026, it is because the BCCI has taken a very emotional and respectful decision. Usually, the IPL starts with Bollywood stars dancing and many fireworks, but this year on March 28, the first match between RCB and SRH will happen without any opening ceremony.
The main reason for the change is a very sad incident that happened last year in Bengaluru. On June 4, 2025, when Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won their first-ever IPL title, a massive crowd gathered to celebrate. Sadly, a tragic stampede took place outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, and 11 innocent fans lost their lives.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that as a mark of respect to those "departed souls," the board decided not to have any cultural or entertainment shows at the start of the 19th season. It is their way of showing that human lives are more important than any party. Even the RCB team is paying tribute by leaving 11 seats permanently empty in the stadium and wearing black armbands during the first match.
Many fans were expecting to see stars like Shah Rukh Khan or Disha Patani, like last year, but this time the atmosphere will be quiet and serious at the beginning. However, don't be too sad because the BCCI has also promised a grand closing ceremony on May 31, 2026, the day of the final.
This is not the first time BCCI has done this. In 2019, they also cancelled the ceremony after the Pulwama attack to help the families of the martyrs. It shows that sometimes being sensitive to people's feelings is the best way to start a big tournament.
