How do I wave to people in Facebook?

To wave to someone on Facebook, navigate to their profile page, tap the Message button to open a Messenger chat, and send a hand wave emoji (👋). While Facebook previously featured a dedicated, one-click "Wave" button within Facebook Live and the "Hello" feature, waving is now primarily done by sending the standard wave emoji directly through Facebook Messenger.

From what I’ve observed helping users navigate UI updates, people often get confused looking for the old, automated "Wave" prompt. Facebook removed the explicit, single-purpose "Wave" button from standard profile pages to reduce accidental pings and streamline the chat interface. Now, the most effective workflow is to open the chat window, type "wave" in your keyboard's emoji search, and select the 👋 icon.

Step-by-Step Messenger Walkthrough

  • Open the Facebook or Messenger app and locate the person's profile.

  • Tap Message to open the conversation window.

  • Tap the text input field to open your keyboard.

  • Select your keyboard's emoji menu, search for "wave", and select the 👋 symbol.

  • Tap Send.

Waving During Facebook Live

  • When joining a live broadcast, the broadcaster may see a Wave button appear next to your name in their live viewer log.

  • Tapping this button allows the broadcaster to virtually greet you in real-time.

  • This option is context-dependent and only appears to the host during active livestreams.

Common Pitfalls and Edge Cases

  • Accidental Waves: If you send a wave emoji by mistake, you can remove it. Tap and hold the sent emoji in Messenger within 10 minutes of sending, select Remove, and then tap Unsend to delete it from both sides.

  • The "New Contact" Prompt: When you connect with someone new on Facebook, Messenger will sometimes automatically suggest a "Wave to [Name]" button at the bottom of the empty chat. Tapping this sends a large, animated waving hand, but this button disappears permanently once the conversation active history begins.
