A man is known by the company he keeps. Peer influence both positive and negative is instrumental in shaping an individual’s behavior especially in adolescence. Research conducted since decades have established the above. The influence of delinquent friends on an individual’s choice of committing crime is stronger among those who are deeply attached or spend a substantial time with them.
As kids go through adolescence, they spend more time with their friends. They try to emulate their peers. In the quest of establishing a self identity, they tend to pick up the traits of their friends to make them acceptable in that group. Nobody likes isolation. In that process, they do not hesitate to indulge in criminal acts to maintain their self esteem. They feel that it is the only way to gain recognition.
