I learned this the hard way during job applications. My CV looked visually impressive, but I kept getting rejected without even interviews. Later, I found out ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) don’t care about design, they scan keywords and structure. I had used fancy templates, icons, and columns, which actually confused the system.
What worked for me was simplifying everything: plain format, proper headings, and including exact keywords from the job description. I also removed unnecessary graphics. Another mistake I fixed was not customizing my CV for each role. Once I aligned my skills with job requirements and used a clean format, I started getting callbacks. So honestly, ATS is less about creativity and more about clarity and relevance.
