Mizoram, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh—these are all poll-bound states in the country, where elections in different phases are either on-going or will happen before General Election 2019.

Traditionally, state elections haven’t (and shouldn’t) affect the national political scenario at large. For instance, after crushing defeats in Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, and Bihar, the national position of BJP remained just as strong as it was around the 2014 general election season. (P.S. I know, BJP eventually managed to come in power in J&K and Bihar.) Congress, in state-levels, was doing decently well with its core leaders focusing on on-the-ground issues. BJP local leaders played an equally important role with their promises and propagandas despite their National commander-in-chief.

So, earlier, the political scenario didn’t affect much the national picture. However, that thing has fast changed, no denying. With BJP pitching its identity equivalent to Narendra Modi, the line between national and state BJP has been blurred significantly. And given this party is in power, its this strategy changed the game for all.

BJP’s original agenda and the mantra were “Congress Mukht Bharat”. So, its wins on the state level are helping it to deploy a strategic storytelling. It has created a narration for the voters whether they want a country with non-existent Congress. And since Congress was battling incumbency, this narration has helped BJP election after election. And this same narration can help Modi-Shah party in General Election 2019. In addition, media is playing a whole different role today than it really should. A victory in one state is made to look like “the mood of the nation”. And this is intensively influencing the national voters across the country.

So, with how things are with state-national level politics, how Narendra Modi is the face of BJP on micro levels and how media is playing a critical role, the state elections in the country will definitely play a bigger role in General Election 2019. It shouldn’t—given the state-level issues vary significantly to the macro-national issues. But General Election 2019 will be largely influenced by how the parties do in state elections over the course of months.
