How this year’s Grammy Awards was different from all the previous ones?

The first thing that came as a surprise for me was the increase in the number of nominees by the Recording Academy.

Last year, the academy faced criticism for having an extremely low number of female Grammy nominees and winners, and that gave way to this positive change. This is not, however, the major difference between this year’s Grammys and that of previous years.

The big change is the domination of women on the stage, grabbing one award after the other. I was mind blown as Cardi B became the first woman to receive the award for best rap album as a solo artist and Kacey Musgraves won Album of the Year award for “Golden Hour”.

Out of the eight nominations in the album of the Year, five were dedicated to women, which was a great breakthrough in the otherwise male-dominated academy awards.

Apart from these feats, I was really happy that Lady Gaga won two Grammys for “Shallow”.

The “New Rules” singer, Dua Lipa, who won the Grammy for the best new artist, commented backstage:

“I guess this year we really stepped up”.

She also said that she’s thankful to be counted as one among other significant women in the music industry.

After the last year’s criticism, the Recording Academy seems quite adamant in bringing the gender equity on the stage and I guess the change is for good.
