The Indo-Pakistan relationship has again seen a downfall after the Pulwama Terrorist Attack. The whole nation is filled with angst for its neighbor and wants to end all the alliances with it. Many have even gone to the extent of ending the 1960’s Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan.

Now the question is how much will be Pakistan affected if India ends this treaty.

There are 6 rivers that flow towards Pakistan from India –Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Satluj, Beas, and Sindhu. According to the treaty, India uses the water of three of these rivers, and 6% of the rest three.

It is only because of these three rivers, that agriculture in the North Punjab part of Pakistan and Baluchistan is possible.

So if India stops or diverts the water of these rivers from Pakistan, the agriculture in the above-mentioned part will be disrupted entirely. Although India is threatening to stop the water from flowing into Pakistan, ending or breaking the treaty, however, will not be that easy for India. It will require great time and effort of India to do so.
