It is the worst VFX for sure. As to answer your question, I would say it is one of the worst movies of 2018. It is the director of Dhoom 3, Vijay Krishn Acharya, who directed this historical fiction drama, and just like Dhoom 3, he failed badly here.
Netizens are as frenzied as those who went to watch the movie (with the hiked ticket prices) and returned disappointed. Consequently, internet is flooding with memes trolling Thugs of Hindostan.
The cast, which ensured Amitabh Bacchan and Amir Khan first time together, was a good marketing strategy to lure audience at the gates of theatres, but once they entered and settled themselves, they found nothing like they expected. The story was insubstantial, and distorted the history of the real 18th and 19th century thugees to a considerable degree.
Thugs of Hindostan –even if it’s not the worst movie (because Race 3 was also released in 2018) –is a great example telling us that taking the story from an English novel
and the idea and conceptualization from a Hollywood movie (Pirates of Caribbean), cannot ensure a movie to be good.
The movie has failed both the history, literature, and cinema.
Amitabh Bacchan with his elaborate costumes, satisfactory acting skills, and enigmatic character of Khudabaksh, tried very hard to save the movie. He however, could not compensate for what Amir Khan did (he was not playing Firangi, but Jack Sparrow, in which too he failed very badly). Also, Katrina Kaif did just what was expected from her –playing the sequel of Chikni Chameli –and hence could not be blamed for not contributing towards the upliftment of the movie.
The character of Fatima Sheikh is shown as a brave-lady character but just like any other Bollywood movie, this female character has been infantilized –which could be justified seeing the conditions of women in 19th century. The director however, forgot this realistic streak entirely while cladding the ornamental character of Surraiya (Katrina Kaif) in as much fantastical a way as possible.
So yes, the movie satisfies a lot of criteria for being the worst movie of 2018, but this can’t be said with confidence, knowing the potential of Bollywood and that 2018 is not over yet.
