There are two kinds of Char Dham Yatra. The main one is the one which involves the journey of four sacred Hindu places in the four directions of India –Badrinath in North, Rameswaram in South, Puri in East and Dwarka in West.

It is said that the Hindu Philosopher Adi Sankaracharya coined the term to refer to these four places.

Some Hindus, however, go to the journey of four sacred Hindu places in Uttarakhand and call it “Chota Char Dham Yatra”. In these, fall Badrinath, Yamunotri, Gangotri, and Kedarnath.

Be it any of the two Char Dham, there are many places that fall in the way of these sacred places and are, as worth visiting as them. My favorite five are listed below:

1. Hem Kund Sahib, Uttarakhand

It is a Gurudwara situated in one of the highest peaks of Uttarakhand. When we talk about visiting Badrinath and Kedarnath, there is no way one can miss this picturesque Gurudwara standing amidst the snow. A visit to Hem Kund Sahib involves a lot of adventure and trekking and will make your experience great all together. You can also visit the Valley of Flowers which is just above the Gurudwara if you have time.

2. Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand

The place is quite famous for its Ashrams and Temples which give a tough competition to the real Kaashi. The holy city of Uttarkashi is situated on the banks of Ganga or Bhagirathi. The Vishwanath Temple and the Shakti Temple there should not be missed at any cost.

3. Haridwar and Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

Well, the chances are that you have already visited these two places popular as they are. But if you have not, there would be no better chance than this. The Ganga Arti and Har ki Pauri are the religious attractions there and give you peace at heart. And the river rafting in Rishikesh is the adventurous aspect for which provides your thrill.

4. Chilika Lake, Puri

You must have heard about this lake and its importance since childhood. This brackish water lagoon in Odisha has Nalaban Island or Nalabana bird sanctuary. Baliharachandi Beach and Kalajai Island Lake can also be visited for picturesque views and splendid scenes.

5. Former President APJ Abdul Kalam House, Rameswaram

It is the birthplace of the former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Also known as Kalam House, the place is quite famous among tourists and travelers.
