There have been many very good science fiction movies to date. Saying which one is top “ever” is a tough call.
For many people, Star Wars would always be the top name in this genre. And rightly so!
In specific, released in 1983, Star Wars Episode VI (Return of The Jedi) still remains as a gold standard. Today’s kids might not necessarily appreciate the movie due to its outdated CGI. But the movie is still untouchable from every angle.
In fact, the franchise’s recent release (in 2018) – Solo: A Star Wars Story – is equally outstanding. The story is amazing, and so is the graphics.
Aside from Star Wars, I love Interstellar. This one is Christopher Nolan
’s masterpiece, which is quite intelligent in its storyline and, at the same time, thought-provoking. Most importantly, the movie is incredibly emotional.

The Matrix is another movie, even though I am not a big fan of it, which has a cult following. It packs unimaginable action sequences which have defined a generation.

Here are a few other top science fiction movies in my opinion:
• Blade Runner 2049
• The Martian
• Mad Max: Fury Road
• Back to the Future
• Terminator 2: Judgment Day
• Ex Machina
• Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
• Edge of Tomorrow
• Minority Report
• Children of Men
Now, when thinking about science fiction, usually the action movies come in mind. So, the unlikeliest mention on this list would be ‘Her’ and ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’. Both the movies are complicated love stories with a spectacular storyline, acting, and drama.

While ‘Her’ is a story of a guy falling in love with his AI-powered computer/assistant, ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ depicts the length a person can go to forget the memories of his past love life. If you like this genre, both the movies are a must-watch.
Of course, there are so many science fiction movies – the majority of which I don’t even know about.
The above-mentioned movies are some of my favorites and very popular.
Hope this answers your question.
