“When ‘Mann Ki Baat’ commenced, I had firmly decided that it would carry nothing political, or any praise for the government, nor Modi for that matter anywhere,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 50th Mann Ki Baat.

Read this line. Read it again. He said, “nothing political” and “(no) praise for the government”. Based on these, you will easily understand how a sane individual would/should feel about the 50th episode Mann Ki Baat.

It’s fascinating how a statement can be funny and hypocritical at the same time.

Incidentally, Mr. Modi got the idea for ‘Mann Ki Baat’ over a decade and a half, in 1998, when was on a trip to Himachal Pradesh.

In the episode, he announced the opening of Kartarpur corridor. Giving it a religious shade to hide his duplicitous stance against Pakistan, he added that the corridor will help people visit the sacred place of Guru Nanak.

“The government has made a very important decision -- that of opening the Kartarpur Corridor so that people of our nation can easily go to Kartarpur in Pakistan and visit the sacred place of Guru Nanak Dev.”

He talked about the youths and impatience but conveniently skipped all their problems, including unemployment. He thanked media for popularizing his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ but conveniently omitted the independence crisis Indian media is facing.

Oh, he also talked about the perks of radio and how it has made him a part of every family. Again, conveniently enough, he skipped why his communication with the “family” is only one-way.

In the garb of connecting with the citizens to come off as PM who communicates, much like the previous ones, the 50th Mann Ki Baat was dud and irrelevant for the listeners. For Mr. Modi, talking about “aspirations” “youths” and whatnots, he certainly managed to win some political points.
